چکیده

The process of segmenting images is one of the most critical ones in automatic image analysis whose goal can be regarded as to find what objects are presented in images. Artificial neural networks have been well developed. First two generations of neural networks have a lot of successful applications. Spiking Neuron Networks (SNNs) are often referred to as the 3 generation of neural networks which have potential to solve problems related to biological stimuli. They derive their strength and interest from an accurate modeling of synaptic interactions between neurons, taking into account the time of spike emission. SNNs overcome the computational power of neural networks made of threshold or sigmoidal units. Based on dynamic event-driven processing, they open up new horizons for developing models with an exponential capacity of memorizing and a strong ability to fast adaptation. Moreover, SNNs add a new dimension, the temporal axis, to the representation capacity and the processing abilities of neuralnetworks. In this paper, we present how SNN can be applied with efficacy in image segmentation.

Massively Distributed Digital Implementation of a Spiking Neural Network for Image Segmentation on FPGA

Numerous neural network hardware implementations now use digital reconfigurable devices such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) thanks to an interesting compromise between the hardware efficiency of Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) and the flexibility of a simple software-like handling. Another current trend of neural research focuses on elementary neural mechanisms such ...

Self-Organization and Segmentation with Laterally Connected Spiking Neurons

A self-organizing model of spiking neurons wi th dynamic thresholds and lateral excitatory and inhibitory connections is presented and tested in the image segmentation task. The model integrates two previously separate lines of research in modeling the visual cortex. Laterally connected self-organizing maps have been used to model how afferent structures and lateral connections could self-organ...

FPGA implementation of an integrate-and-fire LEGION model for image segmentation

Despite several previous studies, little progress has been made in building successful neural systems for image segmentation in digital hardware. Spiking neural networks offer an opportunity to develop models of visual perception without any complex structure based on multiple neural maps. Such models use elementary asynchronous computations that have motivated several implementations on analog...
